Is there an art to being lucky?

Have you ever considered that a friend you know well is really lucky? Or maybe it was someone that has been pointed out to you with the words, they “are always lucky” or “I don’t know how they do it!” or “That person always appears to be there at the right place and at the right time”, as if they have done something wrong being successful.

Well apart from winning the lottery or avoiding a passing car by centimetres, most people who appear lucky, probably have that skill set of seeing an opportunity out of a random event and turning it into something positive as it arrives. That is not being lucky that is an art. So, let’s call this the “art of being lucky”. Actually, It should be your mindset of life.

“I’m a great believer in luck. I’ve found that the harder I work, the more I have of it.”  Thomas Jefferson

Luck has less to do with what happens to you in any given situation but more on how you think and act at the crucial time. If cultivated, this process can change a person’s life for the better whether at home or at work. Here are 5 steps you can take to help you become one of the so called “lucky ones”.

#1 Changing your mindset-if your mind is closed, then nothing good can enter

If you think you are constantly unlucky and compare yourself to others that are unfortunate, then you need to change your mindset. You firstly need to change your perception of what luck is.

You need to move away from thinking that luck is merely a random event and consider it as the result of your hard work culminating in an opportunity coming along that you can take up. In other words, the art of being lucky is that you have paved the way for an opportune event to have occurred and now it is yours for the taking.

An example of this is when you have studied for something, passed the exam and then a job opportunity immediately falls into your lap just when you needed it. Someone may say “you were lucky to get that job”, but you know better. You see, this is an example of when you maximised a chance opportunity and shifted the balance into your favour. If you had not passed the exam, the job opportunity may have come your way but you could not have taken it up as you were unqualified.

If your mind is closed, then nothing good can enter. Stop feeling that what happens in life are out of your control. In order to give yourself the best chance of success, you need to think, feel and practise the art of being lucky, by creating chance opportunities and, above all else, stop thinking that you are always the unlucky one. Easier said than done, I can hear you say. Well developing the open mind is the first step. Think life is always bringing me opportunities. Think that things will turn out for the better. Expect good luck-pure optimism is a winner. The next step is:

#2 Keep your Eyes Wide Open and an Open Mind

Before you start on this road, you need a period of reflection. What do you want? In order to attain what you want; you have to firstly know what it is you are after.

I know that it sounds simple and it is. What do you want? A new job? More money? A new relationship? The process of achieving it remains the same in whatever objective or goal you set.

You keep your eyes wide open and wait for the opportunity to arise. Remember, you are not out to take advantage of someone, you are looking for opportunities but for the right reasons. It is not all about taking, it may also be about giving. Get into the habit of opening doors for other people. Genuinely provide encouragement and always listen.

Opportunities arrive every day in your life even when it is you that is giving-you just need to see them as that, opportunities. Also do not be afraid to ask. You may consider luck being down to the right person saying yes to your question. But no-one can say ‘yes’ to you until you ask the question. Want the job? Want the sale? Ask for it. Don’t be afraid to ask.

True luck is down to things outside our control and is rare. What we can control is how we respond to circumstances and also how often we put ourselves into situations that can prove beneficial to us. And don’t believe that it was lucky if you get it despite what anyone says. It was because you were bold enough to ask. Be brave!

#3 Networking and Encounters

Obviously, your loved ones and your close friends are your strongest ties and will mean the most to you and are extremely important. But do not discount the casual acquaintance as a ‘weak tie’ or unworthy of your attention.

One of the reasons for this is that the person you are not familiar with, probably operates in a totally different social circle and has a wealth of untapped experience and connections you have not considered before. Doors open and the possibilities are endless. Information and luck spreads. The key here is to share information, give as well as receive.

Meet up with likewise people who have the same interest or the same goals. Do not worry about asking questions you may think are stupid. Most people like talking about themselves and their experiences, so you will benefit from it. Establish networks. Join social networks such as Facebook. Share your ideas. Ask for their advice. The more people you meet increases your chances of success, whether it is on the internet or in person. You will find joining networks propel you into another world that you may not have considered before.

#4 Avoid Negativity

Excited about this new thought process? Watch out! Not everyone is going to share your enthusiasm and you can bet that they will throw in some negative views for good measure. This is where you respectfully disagree with them, point out it is your view and ignore their statements completely.

There are some among us that thrive on disinformation, negative thoughts and manipulation and they cannot enjoy other people’s positive views and success. In their mind, you have ‘all the luck’ and they may resent you for it. You have better things to do like getting on with being positive and being successful.

Also, negative thoughts are not always within the domain of other people, it may be with you. Avoid your own negative thoughts and feelings as they no longer have a place in the ‘new you’. If you experience bad luck, try and find some element in the event that was positive. If not, try not to dwell on the bad event for too long. You have to move on.

It is natural to feel cautious but avoid thinking that there is evil and wrongdoing everywhere. If you are honest to yourself, honest with others, work hard to get what you want and try to help others, you are following the right path. And there are many people like you doing the same thing. You have just got to meet up with them. The joining of like-minded people can have remarkable effects on the outcome.

#5 Don’t Give Up

This is going to be the hardest part. The art of being lucky is not gained instantly like turning a switch. You also need to understand that It is important to fail because we all learn from our mistakes. Look at it as a chance to reset and start again.

Try getting yourself in the mindset that the art of being lucky is an ongoing process and, most importantly, do not be afraid to fail as you will not always succeed, mostly you will, but not every time.

It will take time to master this process and get all the elements right. You will probably experience a few ‘false dawns’ on the way. As already explained, there is no magic switch in the ‘art of being lucky’ and results may not always be instant. But they will come, that is inevitable as long as you stick with it and the best part of all is that you will be aware when it occurs. You will realise that if you had not taken that action then that good thing would not have happened!

So, you see, that “lucky” person may not have been lucky after all, they just appeared to be, but in reality, they followed the above steps. What do you think? Do you agree? We would love to hear from you in the comments section below.
