Sleeping takes up about one third of our lifespan and dreaming is an important integral part of this process. Everybody dreams but most people cannot remember them with any clarity as to what they were dreaming about-well most of the time.
We create them when we are asleep but why we dream still remains a mystery. As you are more than aware, not all dreams are the same. When we sleep, our brain increases activity and creates images which can be happy, sad, terrifying or downright confusing. Inzspire looks at this function that takes up a vast part of our lives.
The Purpose of dreams?
We have accepted that dreaming forms part of healthy sleep. We also do not have a definitive answer as to why we dream or as to its exact purpose in our lives. Dreams mainly occur during the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep stage, early in the sleep process and initially for a few minutes. Whilst this explanation was the long-standing school of thought, it is now well established that dreaming can occur in any sleep stage as dreaming does returns later in the sleep process for as long as 30 minutes which means that some dreams may last just as long.
When you are awake, your brain is active and, in most cases, your thoughts form a logical process. Your brain is still active when you go to sleep, but your dreams do not form a logical process and dream researchers believe this is because the emotional side of your brain is responsible for activating the dream.
Scientific studies have so far concluded that the dream function is to unravel the events that occurred in the day and are crucial to the stability of our mental and emotional health. This makes sense as we all know the feeling we have when we do not get a good night’s sleep. What we do know is that the dreamer:
- has reduced control over the dream function
- cannot control its content
- can only partially recall what the dream was about
- in some cases, cannot remember the dream at all
Researchers believe that bad dreams or (nightmares), whilst they are unpleasant are helpful to our survival during our times where we experience feelings of uncertainty, doubt and change. They can also occur when a person is suffering from stress or some form of trauma, ill, or on medication or drugs.
Unfortunately, nightmares are here to stay as they form some meaningful function in our sleep routine for our survival instincts. If they had no purpose, experts believe that evolution would have done away with them a long time ago. If you have consistent nightmares, then it is best to consult with your medical practitioner.
Dreams are easy to forget
Experts are unsure as why we have difficulty in recalling dreams. Our brain is full of electrical signals and chemical signatures that are responsible for various functions in our everyday lives. The signal and signature that occurs when we dream probably disappear when we wake up, hence the reason we do not remember most of our dreams.
Some believe that we forget dreams to allow us to retain memory of real events. However, we may have not forgotten the dream, it maybe that it is stored in the deep recesses of our subconscious only to resurface when something triggers it. Many people have confirmed that they remember dreams much later because of some event that has stimulated dream recall.

This is where you experience the same or similar dream over and over. This normally means that you have something in your life you have not resolved, or have not experienced closure.
This maybe that someone has experienced a trauma and has not been able to get over it yet or are trying to deal with it. Researchers believe that recurring dreams are a way that our mind tells us to deal with a problem.
This is where the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming and to some extent, may have control over the dream. Studies have concluded that lucid dreams normally occur in the middle of a dream and its then that the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming.
Lucid dreaming normally occurs between REM sleep and being awake. What is interesting is that that some people have confirmed that they have, over time, been able to influence and increase their ability to control their dreams.
Dream generally are very difficult to recall but interruptions during a dream or REM sleep, such as a load noise or an alarm clock, seem to be the catalysts to remembering dreams as you wake up. Researchers and dream enthusiasts believe that dream recall helps you understand your subconscious mind more, help your decision making, assist stress management and simply be a source of inspiration.
