What do we mean by the term ‘chakras’? Chakras are energy centres within your energy field, a subtle emanation around the body, known as the”aura,” according to Hindu spiritual practice. Quite simply, each chakra is associated with a specific body part and possesses both mental and physical qualities. In this post, we explore each chakra point on your body and how you can improve your quality of life, by following these simple steps.
They run from the base of your tailbone to the top of your head and the exact number of chakras varies according to various energy theorists; but generally, there are seven major chakras.
The term ‘chakra’ is a Sanskrit word, (a classical language of South Asia) meaning “wheel,” and is represented as spinning wheels of energy. Each “wheel” vibrates at a specific frequency, allowing energy from the universe to flow through the body.
Now before some dismiss the explanation of chakra as just a placebo effect, there is evidence, whilst not scientifically proven, to back up the theory of energy healing, which includes chakras. There have been a lot of clinical studies done on how energy healers use the chakras to help others heal, with positive results on pain, anxiety, and even immune and hormone dysfunction.
The seven main chakras points
Each chakra is related to a specific part of the body, and are defined as a colour, an acupuncture point, crystals, and a specific mood. If any chakra point is blocked, yoga is recommended to help align it. In the world of Yoga, there are various poses to help alleviate problems with any chakra point in your body. Details are provided under each section below, and there is a free yoga book on offer at the end of this post.
1 The Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)
Location: Top of your head:
Colour: Violet, white:
Crystal: Clear quartz, apophyllite, selenite
The spiritual bond and transformation are the focus of this chakra. This chakra also helps you to recognise your own divinity, the angelic energy, uplifting and encouraging you and is your source to God which helps you understand that you are a soul in a human body.
Stress, sickness, emotional upheaval, and conflict can all cause blockages or imbalances in your chakra system. When the crown chakra is obstructed, it can cause you to have lack of inspiration, it can contribute to spiritual malaise and detachment from the world around you.
This is the most ambitious pose and if not suitable or too difficult, you can obtain the same result in adopting the Savasana position.
Savasana is a technique that involves gradually calming one body part, one muscle, and one thought at a time. When you repeat this exercise on a regular basis, it teaches the body to relieve tension and increases your physical and emotional well-being.
Alternative treatment-Add a few drops of frankincense, an essential oil that is said to balance crown energy, to a warm bath. Aromatherapy has the potential to be therapeutic.
2 The Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
Location: Centre of your forehead
Crystal: Amethyst, kunzite lepidolite
Wisdom is represented by the third eye chakra, which is also where the intuition and intuitive abilities reside. Clear thinking, spiritual contemplation, and self-reflection are all possible through the third eye.
It is the physical body’s highest chakra, allowing it to have imaginative insight. The third eye can also assist in determining one’s truth and values by seeing what one chooses to see (reality) in the world.
When your Third Eye chakra is blocked, you lose your sense of direction and your life becomes stagnant
Yoga position-Sukhasana (Easy Pose).
Helps you look inwards and internal organs are flexed and held supple by this exercise. It extends and lengthens the spine. When the head and torso are supported, it relieves neck and lower back pain. It also stretches the hips, thighs, and ankles gently.
Alternative treatment– Since sleep is so vital for your third eye, getting plenty of good sleep every night is the best thing you can do to take care of it. Meditation is one tool for addressing the problem of a Third Eye blockage. Healthy eating and any kind of energy healing, such as aromatherapy, chakra stones, or sound therapy, can also aid in the restoration of the Third Eye’s equilibrium.
3 The Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)
Location: At your neck
Crystal: Aquamarine, blue aragonite
The throat chakra represents your capacity to communicate, express yourself, and understand and speak your inner truth “purely.” This entails being true to yourself and others by sharing your needs, desires, and opinions.
You can experience difficulties with creativity and speech if your throat chakra is blocked or misaligned. Physical symptoms such as thyroid dysfunction, sore throat, and hearing difficulties may all be caused by throat chakra issues. Chakra stones are thought to be able to rebalance this chakra.
Yoga position-Lion’s breath Breathing posture
Not only does Lion’s Breath stretch your facial muscles, but it also strengthens your throat and spine. Lion’s Breath improves confidence by opening the throat chakra.
It also increases circulation thus relieving anxiety and tightness. It’s a rousing and energising breath that helps to relax the mind.
Alternative treatment-Neck stretching is beneficial and regular chanting or singing practise can also be valuable.
4 The Heart Chakra (Anahata)
Location: At the center of your chest
Colours: Green, pink
Crystal: Rose quartz, watermelon tourmaline, aventurine
The heart chakra, also known as the anahata chakra in Sanskrit, is located at the base of the spine, near the heart. Anahata loosely translates to “unharmed.” As a result, the heart chakra serves as a source of compassion, empathy, affection, and forgiveness for the individual.
Stress and emotional pain, which can be brought on by bad memories, old programming, emotions, and/or overthinking, can block your heart chakra, making it difficult to shape and maintain healthy relationships.
Yoga position-Upward-Facing Dog
This is a back-bending asana in western yoga as exercise. It is usually part of the widely-performed (12) Surya Namaskar series.
Alternative treatment– Do breathing exercises, eat leafy greens, and surround yourself with greenery, such as house plants.
5 The Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
Location: Above your belly button
In Sanskrit, the solar plexus chakra, or Manipura, means “city of jewels.”. It is the source of personal control and is located in the upper belly at the diaphragm. Personality, ego, self-esteem, and identity, as well as personal independence, choice, confidence, and authenticity, are all governed by this chakra.
Nausea, bloating, and other digestive problems are symptoms of chakra blockage. A chakra imbalance in the stomach can cause emotional distress in addition to physical symptoms. Physical exercises, such as beginning a yoga practice or some other activity that requires body movement, are some calming practices for this Chakra. The Sun offers healing energy since fire is the element of the Solar Plexus Chakra. Every day, exercise or walk outside for at least 20-30 minutes in the sun is highly effective.
Yoga position–Warrior I pose.
This is a standing yoga pose that aids in the development of focus, strength, and stability. This fundamental pose extends the front side of the body and is beneficial for leg, heart, and back power. Practitioners with a poor heart should avoid this pose.
Alternative treatment-Daily affirmations revolving around strength and self-love are prescribed. It’s also important to get a regular dose of sunshine in the morning, preferably outside.
6 The Sacral Chakra (Svadhishthana)
Location: Under your belly button
Crystal: Carnelian and aragonite
The sacral chakra is the seat of emotions and thoughts, as well as a source of pleasure. It is involved in our sexuality as well as the manifestation of our sexual needs and desires.
Issues with the reproductive system may arise when the sacral chakra is out of sync or blocked, including menstrual cramps, urinary tract infections, a substantial increase or decrease in sexual desire, and lower back pain. It’s also possible to have problems with the bladder, kidneys, or adrenal glands.
Burn Muladhara incense and essential oils to help with the issue. Aromatherapy has potent healing properties that help people feel healthy and secure. Practice root chakra, stabilising postures and repeat positive affirmations about protection (See 7).
Yoga position-Goddess Pose
Goddess pose, also known as ‘horse stance’ or the Sanskrit Utkatakonasana, may be among the top ten inspiring postures; legs grounded and heavy, arms spread and back muscles engaged; the body taking up space and the mind feeling more secure and dominant.
Alternative treatment– Every day, do something creative like drawing, writing, or dancing.
7 The Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Location: The base of your spine
Crystal: Blackstones, like hematite and obsidian
The root chakra is responsible for your sense of safety and is located at the base of the spine, the pelvic floor, and the first three vertebrae.
Since the root chakra is all about being grounded, stable, and protected, doing things that bring you into your body and make you feel connected can help you open it: yoga, dancing, going for walks, having a massage, walking barefoot, and placing your hands in the earth are all good ways to open it.
Yoga position–Yoga Pose
Easy pose or any pose that keeps you connected to the ground
Alternative treatment– Use a grounding meditation, eat more root vegetables, or “earth” (walk barefoot on the grass) every day to help you ground yourself. This is particularly important if your job or life feels uprooted, you live in a high-rise building, you’re constantly surrounded by crowds, or you travel often.
